The final round of the 12th "Chinese Bridge" contest for non-Chinese secondary school students was held in Malawi on June 15, 2019.
The contest was hosted by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Chinese Embassy in Malawi. It was organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), which is jointly set up by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) and the UNIMA.
Liu Hongyang, Chinese ambassador to Malawi, said he was happy that more and more Malawians are learning the Chinese language while acknowledging the Confucius Institute's achievement in teaching Chinese and spreading Chinese culture since it was launched about three years ago.
Some 10 contestants selected from roughly 1,000 secondary school students who are studying Chinese participated in the competition. Grace Gondwe from the Good Shepherd International School and Kalua Blessings from the Amitofo Care Center (ACC) won the grand prize and the first prize respectively.
Representatives from local Chinese enterprises, local Chinese people and students watched the competition which strengthened the cultural communication and friendship between the Chinese and Malawian people.
