Commemoration Meeting of the 60th Anniversary of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

On the morning of September 10th, the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BCUM) held a meeting in commemoration of its 60th anniversary on the Liangxiang campus. More than 3000 people attended the meeting including alumni representatives from home and abroad, representatives of all walks of life, international partner representatives, and representatives of BUCM faculty, staff and students. The meeting was broadcast live on Hepingjie and Wangjing campuses of BUCM.

Before the start of the commemoration meeting, attendees enjoyed a short documentary which celebrated the glorious history of BUCM. The meeting began officially after the big events were reviewed in the countdown to the anniversary in the documentary.

Firstly, President Xu Anlong delivered a speech. On behalf of BUCM, he extended the greatest respect and heartfelt gratitude to the government officials who have been offering care and love to the development of BUCM, friends from all walks of life who have been giving care and support to BUCM, and all BCUM faculty, staff and students. He said that BUCM has been leading the establishment and development of TCM higher education in China since it was founded 60 years ago. He believed the six decades have witnessed great contributions BCUM has made to the development of TCM in China, the hardships it has experienced and overcome, its pioneering innovations, its leadership and achievements in reform, its nurturing of great teachers and students, and its pursuit of superb medical proficiency and ethics to benefit the humanity. In these 60 years, BUCM have been adhering to its motto “Qin Qiu Bo Cai, Hou De Ji Sheng” (Study Diligently, Make Use of the Strengths of All Others; Value Virtue and Benefit the Society by Practicing Medicine). Based on the motto, BUCM has formed distinctive characters and spirits, i.e. “confidence and consistency in university management, quiet persistence in educational attitude, tolerance and open mind, leadership and pioneering spirit.” They are the powerful driving force and inexhaustible source of the development. Looking forward to the future, President Xu said that BUCM must take advantage of the national support for the development of TCM to give full play to the unique strengths of TCM, and promote its global dissemination. Furthermore, BUCM must continue leading the development of higher education of traditional Chinese medicine by highlighting its characteristics, strengthening its advantages, and playing an exemplary role in the reform and development of TCM education. Finally, BUCM must better serve such national development strategies and initiatives as “Healthy China”, “The Belt and Road Initiative”, and make great efforts to transform BUCM into a “top-ranking internationally renowned research university with distinctive features”.

Then the teachers and student recital group recited An Ode to BCUM. That was followed by a graceful dance Brilliance by teachers and students from the university dance group to pay tribute to the 60th anniversary.

Chao Enxiang, National TCM Master and one of the first alumni since the establishment of BCUM, delivered a speech.

Professor Xu Jianguang, President of the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine expressed warm wishes for the 60th birthday of BCUM as a representative of peer TCM universities and colleges.

Professor Zhang Boli, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, addressed the meeting.

Professor Barney Glover, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Western Sydney University made his speech. He expressed his appreciation for the kind invitation from BUCM, and congratulated on its achievements. President Glover commented that the cooperation between UWS and BUCM in the field of Chinese medicine was a best embodiment of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement. The two universities have strengthened their collaboration in research on traditional Chinese medicine, joint programs, and more relevant and effective clinical services, serving as a successful example of international cooperation in TCM. They look forward to more fruitful cooperation in the future.

Next, President Xu Anlong read a congratulatory letter from Turkmenistan President Berdymukhamedov, Honorary Professor of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. He writes that having trained a large number of TCM professionals, BUCM is a world leading institution engaged in research, prevention and treatment of various complex diseases. In recent years, the cooperation between China and Turkmenistan has reached new levels in economy, human resources, scientific and technological research, and culture. In particular, he believes that such cooperation can be furthered in the incorporation of TCM into the modern means of disease prevention and treatment.

Then, Mr. Wang Guoqiang, Vice Minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) and Director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), delivered a speech. He warmly congratulated, on behalf of NHFPC and SATCM, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine on its great achievements in the 60 years since its establishment, and especially in the 30 years since reform and opening up. He said that BUCM was established with the care and support from former President Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai and other early high-ranking government officials since the founding of PRC. It is one of the four earliest established institutions of higher learning of traditional Chinese medicine approved by the State Council. Under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the university has been adhering to the socialist orientation in education, and gradually formed an educational system offering multiple programs at different levels and of different types. It has also established and developed a disciplinary system with distinctive features and strengths led by national key disciplines. The university has cultivated a large number of medical and research workers and teachers who are now leaders and backbone in their fields, making contributions to the development of a well-off society and traditional Chinese medicine. As an alumnus, he took pride in the development and contribution of his alma mater just like thousands of other alumni. He finally pointed out that BCUM should take more initiative in its development with great enthusiasm and concrete measures by seeking the present opportunity of TCM rejuvenation backed up by the Party Central Committee and the State Council.

Having been through an extraordinary journey, the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is now ready for a new journey. It will strive for its aim to become an internationally renowned first-class research university with top-ranking disciplines and unique characteristics. The commemorative meeting was concluded with a chorus of the university anthem “Commitment”.
