SMU Holds the 1st Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum for Minority Students from Hong Kong, Macao and across Taiwan Straits

SMU News, Oct. 24 On October 24th, the 1st Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum for Minority Students from Hong Kong, Macao and across Taiwan Straits was held at Southwest Minzu University with “Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Common Development” as its theme to enhance the communication and exchange of minority students from Hong Kong, Macao and across Taiwan Straits as well as to promote mass entrepreneurship and innovation. The Forum was hosted by Southwest Minzu University and supported by Tencent WeStart under the guidance of the SEAC Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Taiwan Affairs Office from the People’s Government of Sichuan Province, and Education Department of Sichuan Province. Present at the Forum were more than 90 members including startup instructors across Taiwan Straits and from Hong Kong and Macao, excellent youth entrepreneurs as well as minority teachers and students from universities.

Ding Keyi, Vice-president of SMU, presided over the opening ceremony, and Lan Haibin, Deputy Director of the SEAC Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, delivered a key speech. Mr. Lan spoke highly of efforts made by Southwest Minzu University on its exchange and cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, increasing understanding and common development across Taiwan Straits, among Hong Kong, Macao and mainland, especially for young college students. He pointed out that it is meant to hold the 1st Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum for Minority Students from Hong Kong, Macao and across Taiwan Straits at a time when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was officially open. China has come out a collection of policies benefiting the people in recent years so that all Chinese fellows can meet new opportunities and enjoy new outcomes based on China’s social and economic growth. A large number of excellent youth entrepreneurs across Taiwan Straits and from Hong Kong and Macao has stood out and created business wonders in the cultural and creative industry, the Internet and modern service. The SEAC Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs will continue to advocate the notion that “Both sides of the Taiwan Straits are one family” and perform actual deeds, make good signs and solve problems for youth and cultural exchange and cooperation across Taiwan Straits and among Hong Kong, Macao and mainland. College students are expected to communicate more, understand more and make progress together through the Forum. At the same time, they can proceed in step with each other on the way of entrepreneurship and jointly assume the important task of the Chinese dream of realizing Chinese rejuvenation.

Another two important speeches were made by Bai Gang, the inspector of Taiwan Affairs Office from the People’s Government of Sichuan Province and Director of Division of Communications, and He Yu, Deputy Director of Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs from Education Department of Sichuan Province. Both extended warm congratulations to the convocation of the Forum and expressed their hope that SMU can take full play of its function for being the first national Base of Exchange and Cooperation for Minority across Taiwan Straits, thus continually pushing forward the youth and cultural exchange and cooperation across Taiwan Straits and from Hong Kong and Macao.

Zeng Ming, President of Southwest Minzu University, also gave a speech at the opening ceremony. On behalf of more than 30,000 teachers and students of 56 ethnic groups, President Zeng expressed a heartfelt gratitude to guiding units and co-organizers of the Forum, and extended a warm welcome to leadership, guests, teachers, students and friends from universities and colleges. He noted that it is a great thing to held the Forum for SMU’s openness, cooperation and exchange with the outside. Furthermore, it is of great significance for college students across Taiwan Straits and from Hong Kong and Macao for it has been 40 years since mainland China carried out the reform and opening-up. All guests are expected to talk freely during the Forum, brainstorm ideas and suggestions for the innovation and entrepreneurship of the students across the Taiwan Straits and from Hong Kong and Macao, and contribute wisdom and strength to each other's exchange and cooperation to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results. After the opening ceremony, Professor Li Jiahua, Vice-chairman of Committee for Entrepreneurship Education Guidance, Ministry of Education, and Yang Xinhua, Vice-chairman of China Cross-Strait Association for Minority Cultural and Economic Development, gave keynote speeches entitled Ways of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for College Students and Methods of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Taiwan Minority respectively.

During the forum, experts for startup guidance and representatives of young entrepreneurs gave 10 keynote speeches for teachers and students. Besides, more than 40 roadshow programs of participants will be performed over the forum. At the same time, participants will pay field visits to Sichuan Provincial College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and AsiaStars Industrial Park, etc.
