“Building a High-quality Rural School Teacher Team” International Seminar

In response to the demand for capacity building of teacher education institutions proposed by the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka, UNESCO International Rural Education Research and Training Center, the theme “Building a Quality Rural School Teacher Team” international seminar was hosted jointly by Beijing Normal University Faculty of Education and Sri Lanka Ministry of Education during October 22 to 26. Teacher education officials from the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka and 25 deans and deputy deans of the 19 national education institutes of the country participated in the seminar.

 

 

Professor Huang Ronghuai, Director of the Center for Rural Education, Professor Zhu Xudong, head of Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University, Ms. Mohamed Farook Noorul Harija, Director of the Teacher Education Management Division of the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka, and Mr. Pei Boyong, Education Project Officer of the UNESCO Representative Office in China, attended the opening ceremony of the seminar.

Under the guidance of the “Education 2030” framework advocated by UNESCO, this seminar designed and implemented a variety of learning activities for students based on the actual needs of teacher education development in Sri Lanka. Senior experts from the education project of the UNESCO Beijing Office, senior officials of the Uganda Ministry of Education Primary School Teacher Education, and teacher education experts from the Faculty of Education of Beijing Normal University and the Beijing Institute of Education gave lectures to the seminar.

The seminar also went to Pinggu District Education Committee, Pinggu District Fangguang Center Primary School, Chaoyang District Lou Zi Zhuang Central Primary School, visited the campus, discussed with local education committee leaders, principals and teachers, and went deep into the classroom to observe Chinese rural teachers professional development, classroom teaching and school-based teaching and research through various forms of study. The participants said that they have gained a lot during the one-week study.

 

 

 The Center for Rural Education is a second-class center established by UNESCO and the Chinese government in 1994 to promote sustainable development in rural areas through education. Over the years, the Center for Agricultural Education has provided several high-quality training and learning opportunities for Member States with the support of Beijing Normal University. This seminar is an example of UNESCO's second-class center to support the capacity building of teachers in member countries, laying the foundation for the future cooperation between the two sides in the field of education.
