Academician Jesse Zhu Visits Shanghai University

On July 3, Academician Jesse Zhu of University of Western Ontario (UWO) visited Shanghai University. Liu Changsheng, President of Shanghai University, Gong Siyi, Vice President of Shanghai University, and Wu Minghong, Vice President of Shanghai University, met the guests at Baoshan Campus. Cui Wei, Director of International Cooperation Division, Li Aijun, Deputy Head of Innovative Management Department and Director of Military Industry Research Division, Li Wenrong, Deputy Head of Innovative Management Department and Director of Scientific and Technological Cooperation Division, and Wang Yong, Deputy Dean of School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai university, also accompanied in the meeting.

President Liu extended his warm welcome to the visitors on behalf of the university, and gave a brief introduction of the university. Academician Jesse Zhu gave a detailed introduction of UWO in terms of development history, departments, total number of students, scientific research, international cooperation, school ranking, and looked forward to the cooperation between two universities. Gong Siyi emphasized on the highlights and characteristics of international work of Shanghai University. Wu Minghong focused on the achievements in scientific research made by the university in recent years. Subsequently, Cui Wei, Li Aijun, and Wang Yong introduced general situations of internationalization work, research of engineering disciplines and chemical engineering disciplines of the university. Finally, both sides also exchanged views on Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools and international exchanges programs.

Founded in 1878, UWO is one of the oldest universities in Canada. It is called “the Old Four” collectively with Queen's University, University of Toronto and McGill University, as well as the “most beautiful university of Canada”. UWO ranked top 1% among the world's higher education institutions, and is best-known for its Richard Ivey School of Business, which is known as one of the two cradles for case law education in North America together with Harvard University. Schulich School of Medicine boasts a high international reputation and influence, and has made remarkable achievements in the field of small-scale low-consumption surgery.

Jesse Zhu, the excellent professor of UWO, Academician of Royal Society of Canada, Academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering, is a world-renowned expert in fluidization and particuology. He has won honors of the Outstanding Young Chinese and the “Yangtze River Scholar” Visiting Professor of the Ministry of Education of China, the prize for fluidization lecture of American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Prime Minister award of excellent scientific research foundation of Ontario, Canada, the project medal of Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, the outstanding achievement award for Chinese Canadian professionals and other top prizes, as well as the Hellmuth supreme scientific research accomplishment award of University of Western Ontario. Besides, he is the only recipient in the history of Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) to win the three major awards (the Young Scientist Award, the Best Industrial Application Award and CIC highest accomplishment prize—R. S. Johnson Memorial Prize).
