Academician Zhores I. Alferov, the Great Master of Science of BUPT “111” International Academic Talents Base, Won the 2014 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the PRC

Date: January 11, 2015

The ceremony for 2014 National Science and Technology Award was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in the morning of January 9. Academician Zhores I. Alferov, Nobel Laureate, the Great Master of Science of “111” International Academic Talents Base (BUPT), Honorary Director of the State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (BUPT), Director of the Russian-Chinese Joint Laboratory of Information Optoelectronics and Nanoheterostructures, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Rector of RAS St. Petersburg Academic University, was awarded the 2014 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the PRC. Chinese President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, handed over the certificate to Prof. Alferov.

As the only Chinese partner of Academician Alferov and his research team, BUPT sent the warmest congratulations to him with highest respect.

Prof. Alferov has established substantive cooperation with the team of Prof. REN Xiaomin, Vice President of BUPT and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (BUPT, “111 base”) since recruited as the Honorary Professor by BUPT in 2005. Prof. Alferov has held the post of Honorary Director of the above lab since 2006 and the Great Master of Science of International Academic Talents Base of Key Technologies for Telecommunications and Networks jointly set up by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and the Ministry of Education. He proposed to lead the preparation for the Chinese - Russian Joint Laboratory (he himself took up the post of Director of the lab cooperated by BUPT and St. Petersburg Academic University of the Russian Academy of Sciences) in 2009. The cooperative agreement of preparation for the lab was signed by the two universities in November 2009, while the joint lab started to run formally after the formal agreement was signed in March 2010. The State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (BUPT), under the full support of Prof. Alferov over the years, was successfully upgraded to the state key lab in 2011; while the joint lab was identified as Beijing International Sci-Tech Cooperative Base in 2014. Prof. Alferov spared no effort to guide the important research programs of national 973 programs undertaken by BUPT, resulting in remarkable achievements in cooperative research of semiconductor heterostructure physics and technology as well as fundamental physics. Under the guidance and influence of Prof. Alferov, the research ability of BUPT’s research team has been improved quickly, with achievements in important original theoretical research results including “the theory of fractional dimensionalities of electron-states-architecture in crystal materials based on the concept of energy-level-dispersion”, and principles and technological breakthrough in “room-temperature lasing of silicon-based III-V semiconductor lasers” and “preparation and characterizations of the quantum-dot/Nanowire hetero-dimensional complex structures”. What’s more, Prof. Alferov attaches importance and support to BUPT’s talent training in the field of heterostructure physics and technology, having educated 2 doctoral candidates jointly with BUPT through the current platform.

Prof. Alferov’s application for the 2014 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the PRC has been recommended by Chinese Embassy in Russia, while BUPT, as the cooperative institute, has assisted Prof. Alferov to finish all the applications according to the requirements of National Office for Science Technology Awards. Prof. Alferov’s outstanding contributions and joint research achievements between the two universities have received high appraise from experts.

According to Prof. Alferov, he will enhance the cooperation with BUPT and make greater contributions for BUPT’s development and Chinese-Russian strategic partnership. We believe, under his continued guidance, BUPT will achieve more success in future discipline construction, teaching and scientific research.
