Australian Students Begin Chinese Course at SNNU

Date: November 25, 2013

On November 25, 2013, twenty students from the University of Tasmania and the University of New England of Australia attended a Opening Ceremony of their two-month Chinese course at the International School of Shaanxi Normal University.

It is the first time the two Australian universities combined their Chinese courses at SNNU with the same schedule. Previously, the UTas has had the short-term program at SNNU for two consecutive years and UNE has had it for more than ten years.

At the ceremony, Prof. Zhang Jiancheng, dean of the International School of Chinese Studies, encouraged the students to be bolder to express themselves. He said, “Immersing oneself in the target language is a very good method to learn it,” and “As language is inseparable from culture, I hope you can make use of the rich cultural heritage of Xi’an city to improve your Chinese.”

Dr. Jayde Lin Roberts of UTas, Dr. Isabel Tasker of UNE, Mr. Wu Dianhua, vice dean of the International School of Chinese Studies and the course instructors were also present at the ceremony.

Dr. Roberts said that more students have been coming to study at SNNU in the past three years and it is a positive feedback and proof from the students of their study experience here.

Dr. Tasker said that she would also encourage more students to come to SNNU and she was happy to see more student exchange and faculty visit taking place between the two institutions.
