BUCM Made Breakthrough in Cooperation with Western Sydney University, Australia

  From Sept. 24th to 28th, a BUCM delegation led by President Xu Anlong was on an academic visit in Australia. During the visit, the first meeting of the first council of BUCM Chinese Medicine Centre in Australia was successfully held, at which the charter of the council was discussed and passed. BUCM signed a letter of intention to cooperate with the Western Sydney University (WSU) and New South Wales Department of Health. President Xu Anlong received an honorary doctoral degree from WSU. The two universities agreed on cooperation in sustainable development of medicinal plant resources. BUCM has made a remarkable progress in cooperation with WSU.

  On Sept. 25th, the graduation ceremony of WSU was held on Parramatta Campus. Hundreds of graduate students and undergraduates from the School of Medicine and School of Science and Health and nearly 1,000 parents attended the ceremony. On behalf of the WSU Board of Trustees, Prof. Peter Shergold, WSU Chair of the Board of Trustees, conferred an honorary doctoral degree on BUCM President Xu Anlong in order to commend him for his achievements in immunology and his leadership in BUCM’s proactive exploration of and outstanding contributions to the international development of traditional Chinese medicine. President Xu then addressed the graduating students of the WSU School of Medicine, School of Science and Health and School of Agriculture.

  On Sept. 26th, the BUCM delegation visited Liverpool Hospital in Sydney and held talks with Prof. Eugene Moylan, Director of the Department of Medical Oncology, Liverpool Hospital and Ms. Josephine Chow, Director of Strategic Cooperation, New South Wales District Health Department. The three parties reached consensus on the treatment of cancer with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine and signed an intention of cooperation. Later, President Xu Anlong and Vice President Hu Kaiwen of BUCM Dongfang Hospital delivered academic speeches entitled "Integration of Wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Modern Medicine" and "Green Treatment of Tumors" respectively. Experts from the Department of Medical Oncology attended the academic seminar.

  On the same day, the first council of Chinese Medicine Centre in Australia was successfully held under the co-chairmanship of BUCM President Xu Anlong and WSU President Barney Glover. The meeting discussed and reached an agreement on the charter of the council and the future development of the centre. After the meeting, President Xu Anlong, on behalf of BUCM and President Barney Glover, on behalf of WSU, held a joint press conference on the cooperation between the two universities.

  On Sept. 27th, accompanied by Dr. Lan Yichen, Vice President of WSU, the BUCM delegation headed by President Xu paid an academic visit to the School of Agriculture at WSU Hawkesbury Campus. Founded in 1891, the School of Agriculture enjoyed the longest history among all the schools of WSU. The two parties discussed the cultivation and conservation of medicinal plant resources and new technologies for sustainable development. They shared the same opinion that the two universities have great potentias for cooperation in the field of medicinal plant resources and agreed to start substantial cooperation projects as soon as possible.

  On the same day, the delegation visited the administration building of WSU to experience first-hand and learn about its modern teaching facilities and student service system. The two sides had in-depth exchanges in cultivating students that meet the social needs, qualitative development of university and construction of intelligent campus. The BUCM delegation spoke highly of the achievements made in campus construction and development of WSU. President Xu said that BUCM and WSU have great potentials for cooperation in campus hardware and software construction, campus intelligent management and employer-oriented student cultivation. He also suggested that the two universities start exchange of personnel in such fields as soon as possible. President Lan said WSU will do its best to promote smooth development of all the cooperation projects between the two universities.

  The BUCM delegation consisted of Tang Minke, Director of the BUCM International Office, Hu Kaiwen, Vice President of Dongfang Hospital and Ding Zhiguo, Vice President of Dongzhimen Hospital. The successful visit marked a series of achievements at the present stage in the cooperation between Australia and China in the field of traditional Chinese medicine and a new stage in the exploration for diversified medicines in the world.

  In November 2014, the government leaders of China and Australia attended and witnessed the signature of memorandum of understanding on establishment of BUCM-WSU Chinese Medicine Centre in Australia. In December 2016, the centre was listed among the international cooperation projects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), and became SATCM China-Australia Chinese Medicine Centre (Sydney). Over the past four years, the centre has made great achievements with strong support from the two governments,including Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SATCM, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), China Scholarship Council, and State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China. The centre closely links China with Australia, the two countries with the most comprehensive TCM legislation, for win-win cooperation in TCM higher education. It will surely make greater contributions to the international development of TCM to serve China’s national strategy and benefit the whole mankind.
