From May 28 to 30, 2019, Peter Liss, Academician of the British Royal Society and the European Academy of Sciences, and a Professor at the University of East Anglia (UEA), visited the Institute for Advanced Ocean Study (IAOS) at Ocean University of China (OUC). During the visit, Academician Liss attended the Guest Professor Appointment Ceremony and the IAOS Future Ocean Forum, and delivered two academic reports to OUC faculty and students.

On May 29, the Guest Professor Appointment Ceremony for Academician Liss was held at the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM) in Qingdao. Academician Wu Lixin, OUC’s Vice President and QNLM’s Director, awarded the appointment letter to Academician Liss.

Vice President Wu extended a warm welcome for Academician Liss’ joining OUC. He said that since the establishment of China-UK Center, OUC has worked closely with UEA, with exchanges and cooperation between teachers and students of the two institutions and an improved talent cultivation mechanism yielding fruitful results. He expressed the hope that Academician Liss, as OUC’s guest professor, could better promote interdisciplinary joint research and talent cultivation between OUC and UEA in biogeochemistry, environmental science and other fields via the new platform of IAOS, contributing to the innovation of marine technology and the building of maritime strengths.

Academician Liss extended his gratitude for being appointed as a guest professor by OUC and expressed the expectation that he would further facilitate joint research and talent cultivation between the two universities, and increase the exchanges between top British and European marine research institutes and marine research institutes in Qingdao.

On May 30, as the guest of the IAOS academic activity series, the 3rd “Future Ocean Forum: Face to Face with Academicians”, Academician Liss shared his life experience with more than 30 OUC faculty and students at IAOS. The special host of the forum was Zhuang Yunjun, Associate Professor of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering and China-UK Center.

During the visit, Academician Liss delivered two impressive academic reports. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Gao Huiwang of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering and the IAOS Marine Ecosystem Environment Department, and attended by teachers and students from the Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanography under the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Marine Chemistry Theory and Engineering Technology under the Ministry of Education, the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the College of Information Science and Engineering.
