On May 24, 2017, Characteristic Therapy Workshop for Traditional Chinese Medicine was held at the US Center for Chinese Medicine by BUCM in Rockville, Maryland. Cen Jianjun, Minister Counselor for Education of the Embassy of China in the United States and President Xu Anlong ,BUCM addressed the opening ceremony. Maryland Senator Susan Lee extended her congratulations to the workshop and commended the Center for its outstanding work. Experts from China, the US, UK, Canada and other countries attended the meeting. BUCM signed agreements on doctoral programs with Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, Five Branches University and American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at the workshop.

The workshop consisted of two parts, i.e. lectures on modern medicine and demonstration of traditional Chinese medical therapies. Scholars who delivered excellent speeches included BUCM President Xu Anlong, Graig Hopp from National Institute of Health, David YW Lee and Helene M Langevin from Harvard Medical School, Yung-Chi Cheng from Yale University, Dean Felsher from Stanford University, Edward Yang from Columbia University, and Lu Tao, An Chao and Zhang Xuekai from BUCM. Distinguished BUCM experts such as Zhuo Tongnian, Shou Xiaoyun, Bo Zhiyun, and Zhao Baixiao demonstrated characteristic traditional Chinese medical therapies on the spot.

The workshop provided a platform for close contact between modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, resulting in direct communication between the modern and the traditional and facilitating mutual understanding and integration of the two medical systems. The launch of the joint doctoral programs makes it possible for the US and neighboring countries to cultivate outstanding TCM professionals. A new way for countries with Western medicine as their mainstream medical system to train high-level TCM professionals, the programs mark a great contribution made by TCM to “building a community of common destiny for all mankind”.
