On December 12th, 2017, the 12th Confucius Institute Conference convened in Xi’an city, Shanxi province. Nearly 2,500 delegates, including university presidents from over 140 countries and regions, attended the conference with the theme, “Cooperation, innovation and building a community with a shared future for mankind.” Liu Yandong, Chinese Vice-Premier, C. Daniel Mote and Jr., President of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Anatoli Tozik, Former Vice Premier of the Republic of Belarus attended and addressed the conference. Yang Hui, Director of Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP), Sin Joan Yee, Director of CI-USP, Akanisi Kedrayate, dean of Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, University of the South Pacific, Ren Chunxia, director of International Office, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), Liu Aijun, executive deputy dean of School of Humanities, BUPT and Cai Yuanmeng, program coordinator at the International Office, BUPT attended the conference on behalf of CI-USP and BUPT.
Currently, there are 525 Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in 146 countries around the world, 140 Confucius Institutes and 136 Confucius Classrooms among which are in countries along the “Belt and Road”. During the opening ceremony of the conference, representatives of 25 “Confucius Institutes of the Year 2017” and 5 “Confucius Classrooms of the Year 2017” were conferred the certificates by Vice-Premier Liu Yandong. Confucius Classroom at Cook Islands Campus of the University of the South Pacific co-built by BUPT and USP was awarded “Confucius Classroom of the Year”.
For years, under the guidance of the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the strong support of BUPT, Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP) co-built by BUPT and USP and Confucius Classrooms under it have achieved outstanding outcomes. This time, Confucius Classroom at Cook Islands Campus of the University of the South Pacific’s winning of “Confucius Classroom of the Year” showed that our progress was fully acknowledged by Hanban and the country.
In the future, BUPT will continue to endeavour to promote the construction and development of Confucius Institute, use language as the bridge and cultural exchange as the platform to boost the internationalized development of our university, and facilitate its “Belt and Road” education development and “double first-class” construction plan.
