Dr. Jane Long, Provost of the University of Tasmania, Visits OUC

On April 17, 2019, the delegation from the University of Tasmania (UTAS), led by Dr. Jane Long, the provost, visited Ocean University of China (OUC). Also in the delegation were Prof. Chris Carter, Interim Executive Director of Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, Prof. Andrew McMinn, Associate Dean of College of Sciences and Engineering and Ms. Sara Franz, Director of the Global Engagement Office. Prof. Li Huajun, OUC’s Vice President, received the guests and the two sides discussed joint education and research cooperation.

 

 

Vice President Li extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He spoke highly of the achievements made by the two institutions in the exploration and implementation of the joint education program under the Ministry of Education since 2013, and expressed his expectation for expanding research cooperation and exchanges in the near future. He said that the two sides agreed to establish a joint research center during the visit of OUC President Yu Zhigang to UTAS last May, and an academic seminar was hosted by UTAS last November, attended by professors from both sides to strengthen partnership and facilitate progress in joint research. He expressed his hope that the two institutions could further increase cooperation in talent cultivation and scientific research to promote common development of marine-related disciplines.

Dr. Jane Long expressed her thanks to the warm reception. She said, with long-term cooperation in joint education and research exchange, UTAS was looking forward to working with OUC, a significant strategic partner, in more fields, to meet the challenges that both China and Australia face and to promote mutual socio-economic development.

During the meeting, Prof. Chris Carter expressed his wish to join the program of mariculture in cold water mass led by Prof. Dong Shuanglin of the College of Fisheries and to participate in joint research and cultivation of talent. Prof. Andrew McMinn also looked forward to expanding cooperation, building on current progress in the research with Prof. Wang Min of the College of Marine Life Sciences. The two sides then engaged in discussions about joint research model, marine-related disciplines and government funding, and reached a consensus on expanding joint education programs and establishing joint research centers and institutions. 

Mr. Li Xinqing, President of Australia Education Management Group, attended the meeting. Prof. Song Wenhong, Director of the International Office, moderated the meeting and gave an introduction to OUC. Also in attendance were representatives and experts from the Academic Affairs Office, the College of Oceanic and Atmosphere Sciences, the College of Marine Life Sciences, the College of Fisheries, the College of Law and Political Science and the School of International Education.
