ECNU Graduate Joined Marine Micro-plastics Sampling in the East Indian Ocean

The National Natural Science Foundation of China's East Indian Ocean Voyage, implemented by the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, sent out a scientific research vessel called Experiment No. 3 .

Li Changjun and Wang Xiaohui, two graduate students from the Prof. Li Daoji’s research group of the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Studies of ECNU, participated in and carried out the task of investigating and sampling marine micro-plastics.

The Experiment No. 3 set sail from the coast of Guangzhou on March 20 and lasted for 2 months. After entering its first stage of the voyage, it stopped in Sri Lanka to take part in the second stage before returning to Guangzhou on May 21. They spanned a distance of about 11,750 nautical miles, with 103 stations during the voyage.

According to the latest scientific research findings, the research group collected more than 500 samples of atmospheric, water, sediment and biological samples at the scheduled stations; this accomplished the task of investigating micro-plastics in the East Indian Ocean. Li Changjun and Wang Xiaohui returned to Shanghai on May 23.
