First International Conference on the Forefront of Complementary and Integrative Medicine held Successfully at the Harvard Medical School

       From Oct. 29 to 30, 2018, the first International Conference on the Forefront of Complementary and Integrative Medicine was held successfully at Joseph B. Martin Conference Center of the Harvard Medical School, USA.

  The conference was sponsored by the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) and Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital (HMS/MH), Journal of Phytomedicine. The undertaking agents were  the BUCM School of Life Sciences and BUCM US Center for Chinese Medicine and the co-organizers were Massachusetts Society of Chinese Medicine, BUCM US Alumni Association, and American TCM Association. Prof. David Yu-Wei Lee of the Harvard Medical School served as the Chair of the conference. Prof. Shi Yuanyuan, Executive Deputy Dean of the BUCM School of Life Sciences served as the Executive Chair. Prof. Thomas Effurth, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Phytomedicine, and Prof. Wang Jianxun and Prof. Lu Tao, Deputy Dean of the BUCM School of Life Sciences, served as Co-chairs.

  BUCM President Prof. Xu Anlong addressed the opening ceremony. He expressed his hope that through the conference, a bridge between China and the United States would be built to achieve the highest level of medical exchanges and benefit people all over the world. President Xu also mentioned that Western medicine benefited the Chinese people when it was introduced to the East more than a hundred years ago. Today, with the growing demand for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other traditional medicines in the West, he hoped the medical wisdom and treasure from the East could benefit the world too. He claimed that as human beings share the same body structure though they have different cultures, TCM, which has contributed to people’s health for thousands of years in the East, can surely benefit the well-being of other people as well. The conference aimed to create opportunities for scholars from different cultures to communicate, exchange and even collide with each other to spark new ideas and reach consensus.

  After Prof. Thomas Efferth’s keynote speech entitled Anti-cancer Research of Artesunate and Clinical Practice, Prof. Xu Anlong delivered one on the New Mechanism of APA Regulation of Immune Response, in which he also emphasized that the wisdom of TCM could be used to guide the research of modern life sciences. Many leading international experts in the field of complementary and integrative medicine shared their latest findings in their cutting-edge research. They were Prof. Scott E. Lukas and Prof. David Yue-Wei Lee, the Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, Prof. Helene Langevin, Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Director-designate of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, NIH, Prof. Lu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr. Charles Wu, Chairman of the USFDA Botanical Review Team, Prof. Daniel Jay, Dean of the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, Tufts University, Thomas Efferth, Editor-in-chief of Journal of Phytomedicine, Prof. Dean W. Felsher, Stanford University, Prof. Scott E. Lukas, the Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, Prof. P. C. Leung, Director of the Institute of Chinese Medicine, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Ma Qiufu, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Prof. Rachel A. Clark, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Prof. Guo De’an, the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Lin Qian, BUCM Dongfang Hospital, Prof. Wang Jianxun, BUCM School of Life Sciences, and Prof. Chang Jingling, BUCM Dongzhimen Hospital. They delivered speeches on the latest research findings in such fields as mechanism of acupuncture, treatment of chronic pain and nervous system diseases with acupuncture, treatment of opioid addiction, alcohol abuse, anxiety and depression and cardiovascular diseases with Chinese herbal medicine, anticancer medicinal herbs, diagnosis with integrated Chinese and Western medicine and research and development of Chinese herbal medicine. Experts and scholars from all over the world commended TCM for its contributions to the world population and expressed their desire and willingness for further future cooperation with TCM scholars in China.

  The conference gathered internationally renowned experts from all over the world in the field of complementary and integrative medicine. It showcased the latest scientific research findings in complementary and integrative medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and acupuncture and moxibustion by setting up a high-level platform for academic exchanges between the East and the West. During the conference, BUCM also discussed with the Harvard Medical School and Tufts University possible future cooperation in TCM scientific research and education. They also reached a consensus that the conference will be held in China and the United States alternatively and the second International Conference on the Forefront of Complementary and Integrative Medicine will be held in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2019.
