Grand Opening of BUCM Chinese Medicine Centre in Australia

The opening ceremony of the Chinese Medicine Centre was held on the morning of August 9th, 2016, chaired by Cheng Jingye, Chinese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Commonwealth of Australia, Hon Keith Pitt MP, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Professor Xu Anlong, President of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) and Professor Barney Glover, Vice-Chancellor & President of Western Sydney University (WSU), marking a new chapter in the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Australia as a result of the collaboration between China and Australia.

This inauguration is a significant step in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on establishing the Chinese Medicine Center in Australia signed between BUCM and WSU, witnessed by Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China and Hon Tony Abbott, the former Prime Minister of Australia, in November, 2014.

The Chinese Medicine Center aims to establish an integrated platform for medical services, education, and research into TCM and dissemination of Chinese culture based on the advantages of two prestigious universities in relevant fields so as to achieve the integration of clinical medicine and research, education and clinical service, TCM and Western medicine, and Chinese and Western culture.

Other witnesses and supporters of the Chinese Medicine Center were Dr. Tony Penna, Director, NSW Office for Health and Medical Research, Xu Xiao, Education Minister-Counsellor, Chinese Embassy to Australia, and Jin Zhiyong, Science Counsellor, Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney.

Also presented at the ceremony were Professor Alan Bensoussan, Executive Director of National Institute of Complementary Medicine of WSU, Professor Lan Yizhen, Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Professor Zhu Xiaoshu, Director of Academic Program of Chinese Medicine, Professor Zhang Xudong, Senior Research Fellow, Professor Zhang Liping, Director of International Cooperation Department of BUCM, Professor Yan Jun, Vice President of Dongzhimen Hospital, and Professor Liu Jianxun, Vice President of Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
