On the evening of April 25, Legend of the White Snake, known for its multimedia stage performance, was performed by the Shanghai Drama and Arts Center on the Daxia Stage at ECNU.
Legend of the White Snake.
Based on a traditional Chinese romance, a story that has been passed down for thousands of years, this stage play presents a new version of Legend of the White Lady from a unique, western perspective. The actors, dressed in traditional Chinese opera attire, blended many kinds of en vouge dance movements into the performance.
An obvious collision of power and restraint, modern and classical, led the audience on a wonderful journey - both visually and auditorially.
On the stage arrangement, a few white curtains were used to project the landscape, including cruise ships, a dragon boat and the Lei Feng pagoda; the stage effect of which portrayed the traditional Chinese painting. The thick ink that spreads all over the stage displays the outline of an ink painting, in movement, providing for an exciting atmosphere against the backdrop of gorgeous scenery for the actors to perform.

This multi-media production of Legend of the White Snake appeals to Western audiences, one reason being that it was adapted by Italian director, Jescurmer Ravel.
It's a beautiful story, said Ravel. "I see people from different worlds still loving each other. In my opinion, love is a great thing. It can defeat everything. No matter what kind of person you are or what you love - love exists everywhere."
Since its first performance in 2008, Legend of the White Snake has been growing in popularity among viewers in Shanghai. It continues to receive high praise internationally, premiering for audiences in other countries such as Korea, Finland and Germany.
