President of Renmin University of China LIU Wei Meets with President of Indiana University Michael McROBBIE to Sign an Agreement of Inter-institutional Cooperation

On 21st September, President LIU Wei of Renmin University China (RUC) held a meeting with President Michael McROBBIE, President of Indiana University (IU), at which both parties held a discussion concerning the establishing of a seed fund and associated issues regarding inter-institutional cooperation in the future.

 

 

LIU Wei began the meeting by welcoming President McROBBIE and introducing RUC’s history, strengths and plans for the future. LIU Wei also expressed his hopes that as two institutions that have both made strides in the teaching of social sciences, the cooperation between RUC and IU might enable and encourage a greater fluidity of exchanges of students, staff and cooperation in research, as well as finding new modes of interaction, promoting further fruits of research and providing training to more excellent students.

 

 

President McROBBIE expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received at RUC, then made a basic introduction to IU, and began discussions with President LIU Wei on donations from IU alumni and charitable works, as well as establishing new subject areas. President McROBBIE said that as a top level independent American university, he hoped that IU and RUC could deepen cooperation in particular in the fields of International Relations and Law.

 

 

After the meeting, President LIU and President McROBBIE sign an agreement establishing friendly cooperation between RUC and IU.

 

 

Also in attendance were IU’s Vice-President for International Affairs, Hannah BUXBAUM; Associate Vice-chancellor of International Cooperation, Shawn REYNOLDS; Dean of the School of International and Global Affairs, Lee FEINSTEIN, Deputy Director of the Development Division of the School of International and Global Affairs, Callum STEWART; Co-Academic Directors of the China Office, Ethan MICHELSON and CHEN Yaobin; Executive Vice-president of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Michael McGUIRE; Director of the China Office, YIN Jia and Acting Assistant Vice-chancellor of the China Office Ryan PIURECK.

Representing RUC were RUC’s Director of Scientific Research, YAN Jinming; Dean of the School of Environment and Natural Resources, WANG Hua; Deputy Director of the International Communications Branch, LI Zhenshi; Executive Deputy Dean of the School of Public Administration, XU Guangjian; Vice-dean of the School of International Relations, ZHAI Dongsheng; Vice-dean of the School of Arts, WANG Yingjian and Deputy Director of the International Communications Branch, QI Yue, amongst others.

 

 

Established in 1820, IU is one of the oldest and most highly-achieving independent universities in the US, as well as one of the largest in scale, with a campus consisting of eight different areas, of which Bloomington is the most central. IU is comprised pf 15 schools, including the world famous Kelly Business School and Jacob Conservatory of Music, the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs to name but a few. IU has made ground-breaking steps in the areas of public policy, linguistics, physics, chemistry, biology, nano-technology, computer sciences, medicine and philanthropy. IU’s programs in environmental policy and management, non-profit management, social psychology, folklore and ethnomusicology have been rated number one in the US by the US News and World Report.

Amongst IU’s notable scholarly body are holders of Nobel prizes, Pulitzers, Oscars and Emmy’s. In 2009, Elinor Ostrom, an outstanding member of IU’s teaching staff, became the first female recipient of a Nobel prize in Economics.
