TNT Theatre of UK Stages Shakespearian Play 'Macbeth' at CUC

Date: November 27, 2018

"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more; it is tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

——Shakespeare. Macbeth, Act V, Scene V

The world-known Shakespearian Play Macbeth was performed by TNT Theatre from the UK on Monday, Nov 19, arousing an overflow of feelings to the audience. This audio-visual feast was hosted by the Chinese Communist Youth League committee of Communication University of China(CUC) and was put on the stage of CUC Auditorium.

Without many props and actors in the play, it is supported completely by the actor's acting skills and expressiveness. The lines are long and there are many elements of Old English, but the actors managed to make the play as vivid as possible.

After the performance began, the applause broke out, and the audience was absorbed in the atmosphere created by the drama performers, enjoying the joy of the drama.

The TNT Theatre was also satisfied about the performance in CUC. "I enjoy it. The spaces and the theaters are different and the audiences will react different things. Finding new things is very interesting even you have done the play for so many times.” the actor of Macbeth, Martin Christopher said.

TNT Theatre was founded in 1980 in Britain and since then has established itself as one of the most popular international touring theatre companies in the world. "Macbeth" was this theatre's first Shakespeare production and it has been presented in 31 countries and 267 cities worldwide since 2000. The story is about a Scottish general named Macbeth who murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne out of his own ambition and eventually become a tyrannical ruler.

Christopher, the actor, also said that bringing Western play to China is a good way for culture communication. “I’ve been here for 4 times and it gave me a good understanding of great Chinese culture and history the same time I brought our play to China. People come to watch our play and gain something after watching. I think that’s what makes me feel lucky to be here. ”

After watching the play, Cheng Nuo, a sophomore student majoring in TV Editing, said that the insanity of Lady Macbeth impressed her most. “I think that the actress is very emotional. Her yelling, her every action are expressive which makes the whole section of the play very impressive.”

Kelly Grifiths, acting Lady Macbeth in the play, has her own comprehension of Lady Macbeth, "She is very manipulative character. It is very fun to use sort of words that Shakespeare gives. It is so beautiful and so…horrible. I think she is probably the most graphic, violent lion in any of the Shakespeare’s plays."

Although the Theatre made adjustments such as adding the Chinese subtitles and cutting the texts, some Chinese audience still feel a little bit difficult to understand thoroughly.  “Because of some ancient English words, it is hard to understand all of its meanings and you also need to look at the lines on the screen, which affects the overall feeling of the show.” some students mentioned in interview.
