The 15th Annual Meeting of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Held in Qingdao

Date: November 9, 2017

On October 13, the 15th Annual Meeting of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) convened in Qingdao, sponsored by CSIAM and hosted by Ocean University of China (OUC). The opening ceremony was attended by Zhang Pingwen (who is the Chair of the CSIAM Steering Committee, Chair of the conference and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Yuan Yaxiang (Vice Chair of the China Association for Science and Technology, Chair of the Chinese Mathematical Society and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Ju Chuanjin (Chair of OUC university council), who all delivered speeches. Yan Guiying, Chair of the CSIAM Organizing Committee, moderated the session.

This year’s theme was “The Challenges and Opportunities that Big Data Brings to Industrial and Applied Mathematics”, which enabled the conference’s participants to engage in discussions about the latest research results and their industrial application as well as on the most pressing issues faced by the industry. The three-day event consisted of 16 thematic symposiums, a forum on marine big data, a forum on financial big data, a students’ forum, a women’s forum and a meeting of scholars from China, Japan and South Korea. It also included five reports delivered by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two by foreign experts, along with several other thematic reports. These papers covered many recent research projects in the field, such as mathematical applications in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, environmental science, materials science, medicine and the information industry. The reports demonstrated the indispensable role mathematics plays in modern technological development and its significance as a foundational science.

Present at the conference were more than ten academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including Guo Lei, Lin Qun, Ma Zhiming, Mu Mu and Li Anmin. Wu Lixin (Vice Chair of the Qingdao Municipal Political Consultative Conference, Vice President of OUC and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) also attended the conference, along with more than 900 participants – the largest number at the society’s annual meeting to date. The attendees included scholars from Europe, Japan and South Korea, as well as Chinese experts of industrial and applied mathematics, young scholars and students.

The fact that this year’s meeting was held in Qingdao and co-hosted by OUC shows the appreciation of the value of Qingdao’s technological and industrial development by the country’s science and technology community, and it demonstrates the important role that OUC plays in China’s plan to develop Double First-Rate universities. The successful conclusion of the meeting had a positive and profound impact on the city’s technological development and application as well as on OUC’s disciplinary development.
