The First Guest Lecture at the CI-USP & the First Fiji-Chinese Culture Forum in Suva Were Successfully Held

On February 17, the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP) held its first guest lecture in 2015. Prof. Wadan Narsey, a famous economist in South Pacific region, was invited to give a presentation with the topic of “China’s Role in the Pacific”. All the teachers and staff of the CI-USP attended the lecture. Mr. LI Denggui, Chinese Director of the CI-USP, introduced Prof. Wadan Narsey’s academic achievement and acknowledged his support and assistance to the CI-USP including book donation and serving as an afterschool activity counsellor. Prof. Narsey thanked the CI-USP for its efforts in organizing the lecture, then introduced and explained the general situation of the South Pacific, the demographics and economy in island countries, the Melanesian  development strategy and the influence of China’s aid in the South Pacific, etc.

 

On the morning of March 1, the first Fiji-Chinese Culture Forum was successfully held in Suva. Hosted by Mr. YANG Zhaohui, the Councellor of Chinese Embassy, the forum was attended by Mr. ZHANG Ping, the new Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, teachers from the CI-USP, Yat Sen School and Zhonghua School, journalists of Xinhua News Agency and representatives of Chinese communities. The central subject under discussion is ways on how Fiji and China could interact through cultural exchanges. First of all, Mr. LI Denggui, Chinese Director of the CI-USP, Mr. ZHAO Fugang, Director of Northern Chinese in Fiji Association, Mr. LIU Peng, a chief journalist of Xinhua news agency, Mr. YI Ying, Chinese teacher of Yat Sen School, Mr. MENG Gen, Chinese teacher of Zhonghua School, Mr. LI Lianqing, Director of Humanities Culture and Sports Association, and so on gave brief and excellent speeches afterwards. Mr. ZHANG Ping acknowledged the achievements made in the past years in Fiji for the development of Chinese language teaching and culture spreading in Fiji, and hoped the joint efforts could be made to further flourish the cultural development in Fiji while it’s the 160th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese to Fiji and the 40th Anniversary of Fiji-China Diplomatic Relations in 2015.
