The Inauguration for the Confucius Classroom at Emalus Campus, Vanuatu of USP Successfully Held

Date: May 19, 2015

On May 7, 2015, the inauguration for the Confucius Classroom at Emalus Campus, the University of the South Pacific (USP), Vanuatu was successfully held. The Hon. Bob Loughman, the Vanuatu Minister of Education, and H.E. Xie Bohua, the Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, jointly officiated at the inauguration; while Dr. Akanisi Kedrayate, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law Education, was present on behalf of President Rajesh Chandra.

Chinese language classes have been introduced into Emalus Campus since August 2014, in response to the special request from the Vanuatu Minister of Education. With the strong joint support of the Minister, the Chinese Embassy and the Senior Management Team at USP, Chinese language learning and teaching gained healthy development, not only among university students and the community, but also local schools. Ambassador Xie affirmed the work of the Confucius Classroom and expected the Confucius Classroom “to serve as a new bridge and platform for the cultural exchange between China and Vanuatu.” He also emphasized that “the Chinese Embassy will continue to support the work of the Confucius Classroom, and will provide any necessary assistance.” The Minister of Education also spoke highly of the contribution of the Confucius Institute and the Confucius Classroom to the communication between the Chinese and Vanuatu people. At the ceremony, students from Vila East School sang Jasmine Flower in Chinese; while Mr. Noel Napuat, a local student, gave a speech comparing the cultures of China and Vanuatu in Chinese. The VIPs present were deeply impressed, and volunteered to join the team of Chinese language learning. The healthy beginning is expected to serve as a good opportunity for the promotion of Chinese language and Chinese culture in Vanuatu.
