Three Alumni of Southeast University Were Selected as Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering

Date: April 11, 2019

A few days ago, 2019 AIMBE Fellow was held at American Academy of Sciences, where 156 scientists around the world were elected as the fellows. Three alumni from the School of Bioscience and Medical Engineering, namely, Peng Hanchuan, Cai Lintao and Xu Zhen were successfully elected. The successful election of such three alumni has fully demonstrated that the talent cultivation of the School of Bioscience and Medical Engineering of Southeast University has been highly recognized internationally.

Professor Peng Hanchuan is one of our alumni enrolled by the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of our university in 1991 and also serving as Director of the newly-established “Southeast University-Allen Joint Research Center”. For many years, he has been deeply involved in the cutting-edge researches in terms of brain data acquisition, management, visualization, analysis, knowledge mining, structural function model, artificial intelligence applications, etc. in brain science and medical applications. He has published his research achievements in high-performance computing software & hardware systems, intelligent algorithms, three-dimensional map of the brain and brain reconstruction research, etc. in world-class magazines for many times. He is also the inventor of Vaa3D system commonly used in the field of image big data and the minimally redundant-maximum correlation (mRMR) feature-selection algorithm as commonly used in the field of machine learning and data mining.

Researcher Cai Lintao once served as an associate professor at the State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics of the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of our university from 1997 to 1999 inchargeof researches on atomic force microscopy. He is currently serving as Director of the Institute of Medicine of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director ofGuangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nanomedicine, Director of ShenzhenKey Laboratory of Cancer Nanotechnology, Director of Shenzhen-Hongkong Biomaterials Joint Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the 29th and 30th Board of Directors of Chinese Chemical Society. He’s been mainly engaged in nanomaterials and nano-intelligent carriers, nano-probes and space-time dynamic tracing, targeted nano-drugs and nano-vaccines, tumor optical therapy and integration of diagnosis and treatment, etc..

Professor Xu Zhen, as one of our alumni enrolled by the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of our university in 1997, is now serving as Lifelong Associate Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Michigan and Deputy Dean in charge of graduate students concurrently. Besides, she is also a member of the Board of Directors of International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound and Editor of the magazine affiliated to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). As a world-renowned ultrasound expert, she has been working on the development of Histotripsy for more than a decade. She is one of the main inventors of this technology and has achieved world-leading research results. This technology may “destroy” the targeted tissue by energy microbubbles in vitro generated from microsecond high-intensity ultrasound pulses. Her findings have demonstrated that the tissue resection can be used effectively and safely for thrombectomy, liver cancer treatment and treatment of brain diseases.

It is reported that American Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering is a well-known international non-profit academic organization in the field of medical and biological engineering. It has gathered the world's top elites in biomedical engineering (Top 2%) and the most innovative and distinctive scholars and engineers in the field of medicine and bioengineering. It has exerted important influences in the fields of biomedical instrument, medical device, disease treatment and the formulation of relevant public health policies. Its AIMBE Fellow is composed of the world's most distinguished scholars in the field of medicine and bioengineering. These fellows are selected annually upon recommendation of international peers and rigorous screening.
