Date: October 31, 2018

SMU News, Oct. 11--Under the guidance of professor Mao gang and young backbone teacher Hua Yi, working in the architecture department of the School of Urban Planning and Architecture of our university, Xu Linfeng, a graduation student in 2018 who majored in architecture, won the “Excellent Graduation Design Award" at the university-level with his graduation design work, named “Thangka Creative Tribe—The design for the revival of the official residence site of chieftains in Songgang of Malcolm”. Meanwhile, he participated in the “Asian Design Award Competition Program 2018” and he was honored with the silver award of “Cultural Architecture and Space”.

The award was conducted in September 2018 at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou. The jury consisted of internationally renowned experts and scholars, including Professor He Jintang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It was the first time that a national university had won such awards in the allied design competition according to the jury.

Xu Linfeng’s work depicted that, under the context of the rapid transformation of the social, economic and cultural elements in the contemporary, the existing material space structure, especially the historical culture and open space of the traditional settlement in ethnic areas, were also facing the requirements of transformation and reconstruction. With Thangka as the starting point, the design focused on “the revival of the official residence site of chieftains in Songgang of Malcolm” as it rooted in the local and cultural space features. The spatial logic of the whole design was based on the original space of the official residence site, which was abstracted out and then re-translated to create a new architectural space. In the premise of creating a good copywriting, he did the overall urban design of the whole mountain range and finally chose the "Thangka Art Museum" to carry out the design in detail. The design started from the copywriting and then located the direction of the entire design and the design of the architecture. He made a large urban design for the first time. After that, he selected the most interested part to deepen architectural design after he understood the main logic of his work. The part of the architectural design also included structural and interior design and exhibition planning.
