"The International Academic Conference on the 50th Anniversary of the International Comparative Project: Achievements and Prospects" Was Held at Beijing Normal University

From October 29th to 30th, the International Academic Conference on the 50th Anniversary of the International Comparative Project: Achievements and Prospects was held at Beijing Normal University. The conference was hosted by the National Accounts Research Institute of Beijing Normal University. It is from international organizations and statistical agencies such as the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the National Bureau of Statistics, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Beijing Normal University, Tsinghua University, and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. More than 50 world-renowned international comparison project experts from well-known universities at home and abroad, such as the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Oxford, and the University of Queensland in Australia, attended the meeting. Zhou Zuoyu, vice president of Beijing Normal University, and member of the party group of the National Bureau of Statistics, the chief economist Sheng Laiyun attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

 

 

Zhou Zuoyu introduced the development of the Statistics Department of Beijing Normal University and Beijing Normal University. He pointed out that Beijing Normal University has maintained close and efficient cooperation with the National Bureau of Statistics for a long time. In 2017, the two sides jointly established the International Comparative Research Institute, which provided a new think tank platform for China's international statistical cooperation research. He hopes to use this meeting to further strengthen the international statistical cooperation and exchanges of our school and add more "Chinese wisdom" to the theoretical and practical development of international comparative projects.

Sheng Laiyun introduced China's participation in international comparison projects. He emphasized that international comparison projects are widely used in the fields of world economic growth and international poverty measurement, and have extensive influence in the world. The development practice of international comparison projects over the past 50 years deserves full discussion and exchange. He said that the National Bureau of Statistics will continue to support the development of the International Comparative Institute, and hopes to continuously deepen cooperation with Beijing Normal University and promote the improvement of China's international comparative research.

This conference revolves around the achievements and future development direction of the international comparison project in the past 50 years. The international comparison project founder Professor Alan Heston of the University of Pennsylvania, Director of the World Bank Data Development Bureau Fu Haishan, Director of the OECD Statistics Department Paul Schreyer, World Bank International Comparison Project Division Dr. Yuri Dikhanov, Prof. Perter Neary from Oxford University and experts from the International Comparison Project Technical Advisory Group: Prof. Qiu Dong, Professor Xu Xianchun, Professor Prasada Rao, Professor Robert Hill and Professor Robert Inklaar gave wonderful special invited reports to the conference.

 

 

The conference also exchanged and discussed papers on the key themes of the future development of international comparison projects. Topics include: theoretical basis of international comparison projects, technologies and methods for multilateral comparison, digital economy and product pricing, quality adjustment methods and applications, purchasing power parity time series, regional purchasing power parity, and the development of China's international comparison projects.

 

 

The International Comparison Program (ICP) is a permanent regular statistical project initiated by the United Nations Statistical Commission and organized by the World Bank. It is currently the world's largest international statistical cooperation project.
