On November 11th, Prof. Kang Dong-Wan, President of Chosun University, led a delegation to Ocean University of China (OUC). President Yu Zhigang of OUC welcomed the guests in the conference facilities in Xingyuan Building and the two parties engaged in discussions about establishing a Confucius Institute at Chosun University and expanding areas of cooperation.

President Yu extended warm welcome to the delegation and gave an overview of OUC’s history and its latest effort in responding to China’s plan of building world-class universities and top-tier disciplines (“Double First-Rate”). Since the establishment of cooperative relations in 2005, the two universities have been cooperating through student exchanges and many Chinese language teachers from OUC went to teach at Chosun University. At the request of Chosun University, OUC will join in the effort to build a Confucius Institute, which presents an opportunity to develop this cooperation especially in areas of common strengths.

President Kang introduced the history and strong disciplines of Chosun University and expressed the university’s aim of building a Confucius Institute with OUC to meet the demand for studying Chinese language and culture at the university and across the entire Chonnam region. The Confucius Institute represents the beginning of the formation of even closer ties in a variety of areas between the two universities.

The two parties continued their discussions the next day, addressing the detail of the requirements, procedures and plans of establishing the Confucius Institute, and outlining future cooperation in terms of student education and exchanges.
