International Symposium on Higher Education Development 2017 Held in XMU

On December 1, the International Symposium on Higher Education Development 2017 (hereafter, the Symposium) took place in Xiamen University. This event was sponsored by the Society for International Human Resources Development of the Institutions of Higher Learning (SIHRDIHL) and organized by XMU. More than 160 delegates  from 80 universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, to name just a few, participated in the meeting. Also attending the Symposium were over 80 foreign experts.

 

 

Tan Shaobin, assistant president and director of the International Office of XMU delivered an opening and welcome speech. He extended a warm welcome to all the honored guests, experts and scholars, and briefly introduced the history, the school-running characteristics and the latest developments of XMU, wishing the symposium a great success.

 

 

On behalf of the SIHRDIHL, Xia Hongwei, secretary of SIHRDIHL Secretariat and director of the Office of International Relations of Peking University also addressed at the opening ceremony. He first expressed gratitude to XMU for its elaborate preparations and introduced the why and wherefore and practical significance of the Symposium. He sincerely hoped that all the participants, experts and scholars could make full use of this platform, pool their collective wisdom and freely air their opinions, so as to put forward precious comments and suggestions with regard to the university foreign experts affairs.

  

Following that, Professor Zhang Ying, assistant president of XMU Malaysia Campus, and Professor William Brown from the School of Management, XMU, respectively gave lectures on topics of “The Belt and Road Initiative and Xiamen University Malaysia Campus” and “Minnan Culture in the Eyes of a Foreign Expert”.

  

At the seminar, delegates conducted thorough discussions on topics such as “How to Define the World's Top Universities”, “Features and Trends of Global Talent Flows”, and “Comparison and Mutual Learning of University Campus Cultures in China and Abroad”. The lively atmosphere smoothed the flow of ideas and enabled every one at the scene to  voice their views with great gusto.

  

Affiliated to the China Association of Higher Education, SIHRDIHL aims at introducing foreign experts and promoting international academic exchanges. It is a non-governmental academic organization with 253 member universities from 32 provincial-level regions. The rotating chairmanship is now held by Peking University and XMU serves as the vice-Chairman in the organization, in charge of the member universities in the Southeast region.
