On the 28th September Vice-President LIU Yuanchun met with Nancy ROTHWELL, President of Manchester University (MU), and both parties discussed matters such as student exchanges, the training of young talent, and the potential for cooperation in research projects.
Vice-President LIU Yuanchun welcomed the visiting group of representatives and told them about the history of Renmin University of China (RUC), its current state of development and areas of excellence. RUC is a comprehensive research university with a special focus on the social sciences, that produces high quality graduates to take their place in society, with outstanding alumni all over the world. LIU Yuanchun said that since RUC and MU signed a memorandum of understanding on inter-institutional cooperation in 1999, there has been a strong relationship of cooperation and exchange established. In the future both institutions may continue to deepen their cooperation, sharing resources in areas such as academic research, student exchanges, research funds and think tanks.
President ROTHWELL expressed her thanks for her reception at RUC and gave an introduction to MU. MU has a long tradition of cooperation with higher education institutions in China that are a high priority for the school, which includes a research centre devoted to subjects related to China, called the China Centre. RUC is an important cooperative partner for MU in the social sciences, and it is hoped that this relationship can be broadened to include areas such as Business, Management, Finance, Law, Politics and Psychology, increasing cooperation with RUC through more student exchanges and joint-PhD degree agreements.
Peter GRIES, Director of the China Centre then introduced the China Centre and its diplomatic activities.
Director of International Development at MU, Richard COTTON; Director of the China Centre, Peter GRIES and Manager of the China Relations Office, China Branch, Yang Di attended the meeting at RUC. Head of the Office for International Cooperation and Exchange at RUC, SHI Yan’an; Deputy-Dean of the School of International Relations, ZHAI Dongsheng and assistant professor of the same school, DIAO Daming also attended the meeting.
