A memorial service was held on December 20, 2013 at the Xi’an Funeral Parlor to mourn Prof. Wang Guojun, mathematician and former president of Shaanxi Normal University, died of illness on December 16, 2013 in Xi’an at the age of 79.

Prof. Wang’s family and relatives, together with about 500 friends, colleagues, students and officials from Shaanxi Provincial Educational Department, Shaanxi Normal University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi'an University of post and Telecommunications, etc., attended the service and offered their condolence to the family. Mr. Yuan Guiren, minister of China’s Ministry of Education and other officials and scholars also sent their messages of condolences. The farewell ceremony was presided over by Prof. Gan Hui, chairman of the SNNU University Affairs Committee.

At the service, President Fang Yu gave a brief introduction of Prof. Wang’s life and highly praised him. He said that Prof. Wang has lived a life of unswerving struggle, absolute integrity and selfless devotion, made outstanding achievements both as a mathematician and as an educator, and also made remarkable contribution to the course of China’s education, in particular to the development of the university.

Prof. Wang served as SNNU’s president during Jan, 1987 and Oct, 1994. He was a council member of the Chinese Mathematical Society, director-general of Shaanxi Provincial Mathematical Society, a member of standing committee of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Association, and a member of many Chinese and foreign academic institutions. He was the vice editor-in-chief of Fuzzy Systems Mathematics and was also on the editorial board of many Chinese and international academic journals.

Prof. Wang was born in November 1935 in Beijing, graduated from the Mathematics Department of Xi’an Normal College (the predecessor of Shaanxi Normal University) and then taught at middle schools and a teacher training school. He joined his alma mater to teach at the Mathematics Department in 1978 and became the vice-president in 1986.
